A clean way to install Intel C++ Compiler 11 on Ubuntu Hardy

I often need to do write some numerical codes, usually for solving differential equations, in C/C++. The gcc/g++ compiler usually fits my needs, but sometimes when the computational time is very important, I often use the Intel C++ compiler(ICC), which is free for academic uses. Today I got an email from Intel saying that ICC Ver.11 has been released, so I thought it's time to upgrade from the old version 10.1 on my Ubuntu Hardy machine.
official package Step 2) Unpack the .tgz file(Note you will need about 3-4GB free disk space, if you're unpacking the file on a ramdisk, make sure you have enough free space): t ar -xf l_cproc_p_11.0.069_intel64.tgz
If you prefer to use the install.sh provided by Intel, you may simply run the script and follow the instruction, but if you are like me, who prefer to handle the (un)installation process using dpkg/Synaptic , then read on: Step 3) Convert the package into .deb format:(note, you will need to install the fakeroot and alien cd l_cproc_p_11.0.069_intel64/l_cproc_p_11.0.069/
fakeroot alien -cv intel-cproc110069e-11.0-1.x86_64.rpm
(note, here I only installed the compiler, but you may alien to pack other .rpm files, e.g. IDB and Intel MKL, which can be found in the same directory)Step 4) Install the packages: sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Step 5) The license: you may need to place the license that you obtained from Intel into a proper place by type in: sudo mkdir -p /opt/intel/licenses/ && sudo cp <YOUR_LICENSE_FILE> /opt/intel/licenses
Step 6) You also need to modify some of the scripts so that they will point to the correct directories( Note, replace "intel64" by "ia32" or others according to the architecture of your OS ): sudo perl -pi -w -e 's/!\/bin\/sh/!\/bin\/bash/g;' /opt/intel/Compiler/11.0/069/bin/*
Step 7) Add the following lines into your ~/.bashrc file, again, replace the word "intel64" by "ia32" or "ia64" according to your OS source /opt/intel/Compiler/11.0/069/bin/iccvars.sh intel64 PATH="/opt/intel/Compiler/11.0/069/bin/intel64:$PATH" export PATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/opt/intel/Compiler/11.0/069/lib::$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
